Exterior-mounted rolling, solid shutters are also designed to reduce energy costs and to provide weather protection. The StoreSafe® AL7 and AL2 slats are both approved for hurricane protection by the state of Florida and the Texas Department of Insurance. The aluminum shutters have passed the small-missile impact test, where lead balls are blasted at the shutter. Large missile tests shoot a wood 2 x 4 at the shutter at 30mph. These solid profile slats passed both tests easily. The shutter design also impedes water infiltration from hurricanes and strong storms, thus reducing the occurrence of mold and mildew. The AL7-E has patented retention system so that the slats are restricted from being pushed out of sidetracks. It also rolls up in a more concentric roll, reducing the head room needed for the coil housing.

Hurricane Shutters and Security Rolling Doors

QMI solid shutters are used for hurricane applications, residential storm protection, and excellent for window and door security. Commercially, the solid AL6 aluminum shutters provide excellent intruder deterrence where visibility into the storefront or private space is not desired. Solid shutters are also used to protect inventory room doors. QMI uses a special installation technique incorporating large steel plates as washers. The shutter is bolted through the door frame making the shutter rails virtually impossible to pry loose. In fact, a group of burglars disabled an alarm system and had the luxury of spending an hour inside a retail store attacking the QMI protected inventory room. While the shutter suffered some abuse by the crow bar attack, it didn’t allow access even after one hour of effort. The burglars grabbed only the store displays and left.

Solid shutters are commonplace in Europe where energy costs are high. Mounting the aluminum shutters or PVC shutters on the outside of the window is the most energy-efficient location. In the US, most window treatments are mounted to the inside, but by then, the heat or cold, or the intruder is already inside. Exterior mounting deflects the extreme temperatures and the airspace between the solid shutter provides added insulation. Plus, noise is greatly reduced inside the home with exterior solid shutters. The double wall PVC shutter is slightly better at noise reduction, but only your dog may be able to tell the difference. Actual Sound Transmission Coefficients (STC) will vary depending on the existing window system and the air space gap between the shutter and window glazing.
