Our History

Founded in 1986, this family-owned business has grown consistently for more than two decades into a business of more than 120 employees. Jim Miller, QMI President and founder, desired to be a successful businessman like his father, and purchased Mid Continent Rolling Shutter in Naperville, Illinois. Jim had traveled to Europe where exterior rolling shutters are commonplace due to high energy costs and the greater efficiency of exterior window treatments.

Jim named the new company Qualitas Manufacturing, Inc. and expanded the product lines into awnings, window film, windows, and interior storm windows. Jim and his first employee, Dan Mullins, struggled to find a demand for their products. When they did get a lead, it was sold, measured, manufactured, and installed by Jim and Dan.

In 1989, Qualitas moved into a smaller building in West Chicago, Illinois, and was joined by Jim’s brother Steve Miller. Steve focused on sales, which enabled Jim to develop the structure and administration of the shutters Chicago business. While visiting his pharmacist, Steve observed a roll down coiling door used to secure the pharmacy. The QMI rolling shutter was a much better product for the pharmacy application than the ugly rolling overhead door. Steve and Jim packaged a solution to the pharmacy chain which launched CounterSafe®, a core business for QMI.

Expansion was required again in 2002 and QMI moved to its present headquarters at 1661 Glenlake Drive, Itasca, Illinois. QMI owns two connected buildings and has room for future growth.
